Carl and Roberta Volkmann have lived in
Springfield, Illinois, since 1960.  Both
received their undergraduate degrees
from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa.  
Carl holds a master’s degree from the
University of Illinois in Urbana, and
Roberta’s master’s degree is from the
University of Illinois in Springfield.  
With an undergraduate degree in history, Carl’s first professional
position was as a history teacher at Tri-City High School in Buffalo,
Illinois.  He left teaching to enter the field of librarianship and retired as
Director of Lincoln Library, the public library of Springfield. His many
volunteer activities include a term as president of the Sangamon County
Historical Society.

As music educator for more than twenty years, Roberta taught early
childhood, elementary, secondary, and teacher training courses
throughout the Springfield area.  Since her retirement from the Illinois
State Board of Education where she served as Educational Consultant
in the fine arts for nine years, Roberta has been an arts education

Developing Springfield’s Sculptures, Monuments and Plaques was an
opportunity to combine their interests in art and history while exploring
and sharing the Springfield community.  Carl took most of the pictures
in the book, and Roberta was the primary text writer.
