SPRINGFIELD'S SCULPTURES,            Carl and Roberta Volkmann
MONUMENTS, AND PLAQUES              cvolk@aol.com
This monument to Harry Woods Phillips in
Calvary Cemetery tells the story of the
death of young Harry who died in 1863 at
age 13.  Family members have told
Cemetery officials that the young boy fell
from a tree to his death.  His faithful dog
stood guard next to Harry until he was
found.  The boy's hat caught on the tree as
he fell.  The forlorn dog and the boy's hat
still cling to a tree trunk in this monument
carved by Edward Levanius, master stone
cutter, in memory of a young life cut short.
